The scariest job ever.

Posted in Anytime, Personal on August 31st, 2007

I wanted to shoot these guys in the morning, on my way to the office. But I was scared. Scurred, even. They were dangling right about Caribou coffee, and the sound of water droplets meeting their fate on the hot pavement made me shudder.

So I waited. Then, I went out to lunch, camera in tow. I was walking slowly down the alley, then, I felt a droplet of water hit my face, and looked up:

Up above.

And grinned. And snapped. :)

I could NEVER do what they do. Being tethered by a few ropes stories above everyone—ack.

Just wanted to share this with y’all :)

So…being in the house since Monday has been an learning experience. I crave the outdoors. I’ve also learned several things about my dear hubby.

As you may know, (or may not know), Cory’s a syndicated cartoonist. He’s in newspapers all over the country, and I’m super-proud of him.

You can visit his website by clicking on the pirate below:

Oh, and if he’s not gracing the pages of your local newspaper, write to the editors. They like that sort of thing. It makes them feel warm and fuzzy on the inside :)

——

We’re both artists. We both have our methods to creating what we do for a living. But b/c I have a day job, I’m never at home to watch my hubby work. All I know is, Wednesday through sometimes-Saturday is crunch time. Deadlines are deadlines are deadlines. Sometimes I’ll be off to work come Thursday morning, and I usually have to nudge him awake from the floor, where he’s sprawled out amid a pile of drawings, his laptop blaring talk radio, and assorted pens and pencils scattered about. I’d post an incriminating photo, but he’s my webmaster, and I’m sure he has a grillion embarrassing photos of yours truly that he will not hesitate to post in a public forum. :)

But this week, while being drooly from Vicodin, and unable to really go out and do things on my own, I learned:

1. His writing process is usually conducted: a) in the bathroom b) downstairs in our inherited chair (I’ll be sure to make a separate post about that) in the living room, masked by utter silence. But mostly I think he writes a lot on the man-throne. Nothing like Charmin to get your pen scratching the paper!

2. He watches a LOT of judge shows. I knew before, that he had an affinity for them, but…this man watches them RELIGIOUSLY.

3. He’s quiet, but when Photoshop runs slow, he yells at the laptop. It’s endearing.

4. He draws SUPERFAST and it’s always perfect each time. I’m secretly jealous. I wish I could draw as well as he does.

So, it’s been an interesting week, after all. I’ve kinda staked ground in the 2nd bedroom, his ‘office’ b/c I figured he wouldn’t hear my whimpering from the bedroom, and I can say, I’ll be sad to pack up my hard drives and my laptop and retreat to my ‘office,’ the living room next week.

I think I might push myself really hard to go out into the world tomorrow and shoot something. I’ve got shutter finger itch something serious. :)

So, if you saw the post about Evelyn + Tim’s wedding, you might have seen a glimpse of Erin and Derek’s beautiful little girls! We went out for a family shoot in old town Annapolis, and had a great time! Derek says he met Erin while hanging out, a couple years back and they have SUCH a beautiful family, and I’m really excited about shooting their September wedding riiiiiiiiiiight on the water! Okay, I’m rambling, on to the pics!

Here’s a favorite of mine, shot by my wonderfully talented co-heckler Val!

Macayla’s expression is PRICELESS in this pic. I have no idea what Val was saying to her to get this reaction!

Maddy kept cracking me up. I told her the ducks at the docks ate hamburgers, but she didn’t believe me :(

blog4

The GORGEOUS couple, giving into my wall fixation :)

blog6

Derek had a cast on from a manly accident ;-) which I *might* tell y’all about a little later…anyway, Macayla getting a ride:

I LOVE baby feet!

I love their mischievous grins in this photo:

This photo was taken accidentally on purpose, but I know everybody had to do this as a kid! Come on, you know you did!

Can’t wait until September! :)

I’m digging through my good old LaCie and decided to share this with you all! I love DC and all its beautiful places to get great shots. Once in a blue moon, I like to be a museum nerd–okay…I’m a big nerd and if I had every weekend free, I’d definitely be in every museum and sight-seeing place in the District, rolling hard w/the security guards, dig? :)

Anywho, here’s a few shots from the Botanical Gardens, definitely an enchanted place to visit!

Enjoy!

At the entrance of the gardens, there’s this sculpture-like thing made of reeds. I like the details in things so I got realllly close for this:

BotGar5

Volleyballs!

Again, I was realllllllly close for this shot:

BotGar6

I love how everything was sooooo green and vibrant!

BotGar7

If you look really closely, you can see the hair of a spider web on this plant:

Another close-up shot :)

BotGar12

Greeeeeeen :)

I love shapes in nature:

As I was leaving, I snapped this guy getting his green thumb on at a community garden a few blocks away.

I wish I could garden! My mother believes that if you speak nicely to plants, they thrive. I’ve been giving my little houseplant she gave us as a housewarming the cold shoulder, so…I think some sweet talking is due!

Anyway, more to come! I get to have my wisdom teeth removed next week (joy), so I’m sure most of my time in the near future will be spent in front of my laptop, sipping on soup, sifting through photos I forgot all about :)

Backtracking! Michelle + Andrew|marrriiiieeed :)

I lurk regularly on a wonderful music website called Okayplayer.com, and stumbled upon Andrew (another lurker, and wildly talented graphic designer guru-type guy, as you can see here) looking for a wedding photog to capture him and his very lovely (and expecting!) Michelle, so of course, I made it happen. It was in a lovely restaurant called the Foundation, in Old Town Manassas, and a lot of fun!

Here’s some highlights:

The very pretty cake I couldn’t stop taking photos of:

I think the restaurant is split in half, with formal dining on our side, and less-than-formal dining on the other side. They borrowed the guitarist from the other side to play. Val caught this:

Another great detail shot by Val:

The happy couple:

Can I just say I LOVE her freckles? I have freckle envy. I have a maybe-freckle on the end of my nose, but it’s probably just a mole :( but I pretend sometimes that it’s a freckle:

One of my favorites:

Chef Matt and Mike made the best food for all the guests–and the photogs! Too bad we got full 1/2 way through and then forgot about our to-go boxes en route back to D.C.

Michelle is due very soon w/their first! I wish you guys the best and hope you play The Roots in the baby’s nursery!*

*just kidding. well. maybe not completely. :)

Okay, so I’m back-tracking. I have a LOT to catch up on and little down time between things!

I wish I had the ability to buy a big bag of time :)

Anyway, I digress.

Evelyn and Tim!

Evelyn is the cousin of my friend, Vanessa. We go wayyyyyy back, like…middle school! Nirvana and Bone Thugs and Harmony! (pre)Teen angst and baggy pants! She met Tim, but at first wasn’t checkin for him! But persistence paid off :) and a few years later, Evelyn asked me to shoot her wedding!

It was my very first one. I was so nervous! But…looking back, I had a great time! I shot with the very very verrrry talented Geoff who gave me invaluable advice (this was also big b/c I switched from Nikon to Canon), tips and tricks on how to be a great wedding photographer.

A couple snapshots from their special day:

Teamwork!

Geoff is AWESOME:

Keepin in the family. One of Evelyn’s tias made this lovely cake:

And keeping it in the family, Vanessa caught this! And she’s engaged already! I’m tellin!

Evelyn made a GORGEOUS bride:

Tim wasn’t too bad on the eyes, either!

I tore this little mints up after the wedding:

Yum-O!

A final little detail :)

The Rings!

Congratulations Evelyn and Tim! I think I was teary eyed for the most part, b/c it’s so surreal to see someone you grew up with go on and get grown and get hitched! But only tears of happiness :) I wish you guys the absolute best!
